A clicking drive is a clock, not a puzzle.
The noise means moving parts are failing while you listen to it. Every power-up from here is a withdrawal from an account nobody knows the balance of.
What the sound actually is
Inside the drive, heads float over spinning platters on a cushion of air, navigating by reference information written on the surface at the factory. On startup the heads look for that reference. If they cannot read it, they retract and try again, and the retract is what you hear. Click, pause, click.
So the click is not the failure. It is the drive reporting a failure it has already had: damaged heads, a seized or failing motor, or surface damage where the reference information used to be.
Why retrying is the expensive move
A head that cannot fly properly is a head in contact with, or close to, the surface holding your files. Each attempt scrapes. The damage is cumulative and it is not recoverable once the surface is gone, which is why a drive that has been power-cycled forty times by a hopeful owner is a materially worse job than the same drive brought in after the first click.
The instinct to keep trying is completely reasonable and it is the single most costly thing people do. If you take nothing else from this page: the drive is stable while it is switched off.
The half of cases that are better news than they sound
Not everything that clicks is mechanically dead. External drives in particular produce convincing clicking from causes that have nothing to do with the heads: an underpowered or failing power supply, a failed USB bridge board in the enclosure while the drive inside is perfectly healthy, or a damaged connector. Those are ordinary work and they end well.
Working out which of the two you have is the first thing an assessment does, and it does not require powering the drive up repeatedly to find out.
What we do, and what we refer
We assess it free and tell you which case it is. If the drive is readable at all, it gets imaged before anything else happens, taking the healthy regions first and returning for the difficult ones, because a failing drive gives you a limited number of reads and the order you spend them in decides the outcome.
If it needs head or platter work, we do not have a cleanroom and we will not open it on a bench to prove a point. You get the findings in writing to take to a lab that does that work. That referral costs you nothing here.
Common questions
What is the clicking noise?
The head assembly trying to find its reference position, failing, retracting, and trying again. That cycle is the click. It usually means the heads, the motor, or the servo information the heads navigate by has failed. It is a mechanical event, not a software one, which is why software cannot fix it.
Will it start working if I keep trying?
Occasionally it appears to, and that is the trap. Each power-up drags failing heads across the platters that hold your data. A drive that clicks and then mounts once has usually cost you surface in exchange, and the next attempt may be the one that turns a recoverable job into an unrecoverable one.
Does the freezer trick work?
No. It is folklore from an era of different drive engineering, and condensation inside a sealed drive is exactly what you do not want near platters. It has cost people data that was recoverable before they tried it.
Can you fix a clicking drive?
Usually not in-house, and we will say so early. Head and platter work needs a controlled environment we do not have, so those get diagnosed free and referred with our findings in writing. What we do check first is whether the click is actually mechanical, because a surprising share turn out to be power or enclosure faults, which are our work and are far better news.
