Water damage
It isn’t the water that kills the phone.
It is corrosion, and it starts the moment the phone gets wet and keeps going for as long as the board stays damp. That is why the first hour matters and why the popular advice wastes it.
What is actually happening inside
Water on its own is a poor conductor. What causes the damage is what is dissolved in it, and what happens next: the moment current flows through a wet board, metal migrates, contacts corrode, and the residue keeps eating the board long after the surface feels dry. A phone that survives the dunking and dies four days later is the normal pattern, not bad luck.
This is also why “it still works” is not the good news it sounds like. A phone running on a corroding board is a phone on a timer, and the photos on it are on the same timer.
Why rice is the wrong answer
Rice pulls moisture out of the air around it, slowly. It does not pull water out of a sealed device, and while it fails to do that, corrosion continues. It also sheds starch and fine dust into the charging port and speaker mesh. The reason the advice persists is that phones sometimes survive anyway, and the rice takes the credit.
If your phone is wet and the contents matter, the useful thing is to stop the electrical and chemical damage, not to attempt a home dry-out.
A dead phone and lost data are not the same thing
A handset can be finished while everything on it is perfectly readable. That surprises people, and it is the reason a phone worth nothing is still worth bringing in when the photos on it matter.
On Android the storage can frequently be read directly even when the handset will never start again. That is the best case here and it is more common than people expect.
On a modern iPhone a dead logic board usually means the encryption keys are gone, and the data with them, for everyone. We say this plainly because customers are routinely told otherwise.
If it was on an SD card, take the card out and stop there. Cards survive water far better than boards, and this is the most recoverable outcome of the lot.
Order matters
Anything done to make a wet phone run again involves powering it up to test, which is the one thing corrosion damage does not forgive. If the contents are what you care about, deal with the data first. Doing it in that order costs nothing extra, and reversing it is the part people get wrong.
