Deleted WhatsApp messages: the backup comes first.

Often yes, from the backup WhatsApp made last night, and that costs nothing. If there is no backup, or the messages came after it, an Android phone may still hold an older copy of the chat database. Whether we can read it depends on the keys, and we tell you that at assessment.

    Power it down

Every minute a failing drive runs can overwrite the bytes you need.

    Skip consumer scanners

Desktop recovery apps write as they scan. That is the opposite of imaging a dying disk.

When / stop

Two free checks, then stop.

Check the gallery first. If media saving was on, WhatsApp copied every photo and video into the phone's own gallery, and deleting a chat does not remove those copies. Then check the backup. In WhatsApp, open Settings, Chats, Chat backup. Android shows the last Google Drive backup; iPhone shows the last iCloud backup. If that backup was made before the deletion, uninstall WhatsApp once, reinstall it, sign in with the same number and accept Restore when it is offered. You get every chat up to that backup and nothing after it. This is a genuine do-it-yourself case, and you should try it before paying anyone. Before you do it, turn off automatic backup so tonight's run does not replace the copy that still has the chat.

Stop when the last backup was made after the deletion, or there is no backup. Put the phone in flight mode and stop using it. Every new message and every received photo writes into the same storage the old database sits in. Do not reinstall the app again. Do not install a recovery app from the store and run it on the phone: most write as they scan, many are junk, and some ask for your account. Do not factory reset, and do not let anyone flash the phone. Call, and tell us which platform it is and whether it still unlocks.

What we do

Read the copies the phone still holds.

Android keeps your chats in one encrypted database, msgstore, in crypt14 or crypt15 form. The key lives on the phone or in your WhatsApp account, not in the file. WhatsApp also keeps dated local copies of that database for about a week. When the phone unlocks and the key can be read, we image what is there read-only and open each dated copy. A message deleted after one of those copies was made is often still in it. A message deleted before the oldest copy, or overwritten since, is not there, and we say so rather than scan for a week. Photos that were never saved to the gallery live in the same container and come back with the chat that held them.

iPhone is a different job. The chat database sits inside the app's own container, and the practical sources are an iCloud or computer backup and a working, unlocked handset. We work from those. Deep extraction from a dead or locked iPhone is not claimed here. The rule on our phone and tablet page is the same rule: Android depth when keys allow, iOS from backups and working devices.

Where keys are missing, money does not decrypt the media. You hear that at assessment, before any quote. When the messages are needed as evidence, say so when you call. The phone is then received under chain of custody, as described on digital forensics, and every step from imaging to export is recorded. Start with a case form or a phone call; the free assessment decides which path applies before any quote.

We do not run a cleanroom. Mechanical failures (clicking, non-spinning, head crash) are referred after free assessment. We will not open the drive on a bench and make it worse.

What it costs

Published band, then a fixed quote.

Phones, USB sticks and memory cards from $249 after free assessment. Encryption walls are named when keys are missing. No recovery, no fee. Assessment is free. The figure you agree is fixed before recovery starts. Full lab bands and Recovery Studio licences are on Pricing.

First response within 24 hours. Scan and initial feedback on what is recoverable within 72 hours. Recovery within 14 days, usually much sooner. Scanning is the long part, especially on large drives. The amount of data and the method decide the rest.

FAQ

Common questions.

Can I recover deleted WhatsApp messages without a backup?

Sometimes. Android keeps dated local copies of the chat database for about a week. If the phone unlocks and the key can be read, a message deleted after one of those copies was made is often still in it. Once the copies have rolled over, or the storage has been overwritten, it is not possible. iPhone without a backup needs a working, unlocked handset. Assessment is free.

Are deleted WhatsApp photos gone for good?

Often not. If media saving was on, WhatsApp copied each photo and video into the phone's own gallery, and deleting the chat does not remove that copy. Check the gallery and its Recently Deleted or Trash folder first. If saving was off, the photos live only in the chat and follow the same paths as the messages: backup restore, then the database copies.

Do WhatsApp recovery apps from the store work?

Rarely, and they cost you the copies that mattered. A store app cannot read the encrypted database without the key, so most of them only show what is still in the gallery. They write to the phone as they run, many are junk, and some ask for your account details. Do not install one on the phone you want recovered.

Can recovered WhatsApp messages be used as evidence?

That is a question for your solicitor. If you may need them, tell us when you call. The phone is then received and imaged under chain of custody, every step is recorded, and the export shows where each message came from and when. It is done the same way for any party who lawfully holds the phone.
