CCTV recovery when the scanner says empty.
Recorders write proprietary loops, not desktop folders. Hikvision, Dahua, Uniview, Reolink, Xiongmai family and rebadges: specialist work, not generic PhotoRec theatre.
Before you do anything else
Protect the only copy.
- 01
Power it down
Every minute a failing drive runs can overwrite the bytes you need.
- 02
Skip consumer scanners
Desktop recovery apps write as they scan. That is the opposite of imaging a dying disk.
- 03
No repair, no format
chkdsk, First Aid and reinstall fix the disk; they do not preserve what was on it.
- 04
Call, then decide
Free triage: lab job, cleanroom referral, or Recovery Studio.
Method
Vendor formats, named limits.
Image the recorder disk. Parse proprietary containers and carve where indexes lie.
Recovery Studio includes DVR/NVR lanes that refuse to call unnamed vendor formats a PhotoRec success.
Stop the recorder from overwriting the loop if footage still matters. Power policy is part of triage.
We do not run a cleanroom. Mechanical failures (clicking, non-spinning, head crash) are referred after free assessment. We will not open the drive on a bench and make it worse.
FAQ
Common questions.
Why did Recuva find nothing on my DVR disk?
Because it is often not a normal filesystem. Empty in a consumer scanner is expected.
Can you export playable video?
When the stream is recoverable we rebuild playable copies on new media. Completeness depends on overwrite on the loop.
