A beeping drive is usually a spindle motor trying to turn platters that will not move, and the beep is the sound of that repeated attempt. The heads are commonly stuck to the platter surface, and continuing to drive the motor against that can tear the head from its arm or pull material off the surface it is stuck to. Unlike a clicking drive, this one is often failing to spin at all, which means every attempt is force applied to a stationary stack.

CCTV recorder beeping
If your CCTV recorder is beeping, the most useful thing on this page is above this paragraph, and it is free. What follows is what the fault usually turns out to be, how recoverable this class of failure is, and what it would cost, including the cases we would tell you to take elsewhere.
What this usually turns out to be
A recorder whose drive will not spin has usually stopped recording as well, which for once is the helpful outcome: the footage already on the disk is no longer being overwritten. The drive itself is almost certainly stuck rather than smashed, since recorder drives sit still and run warm for years. As with any CCTV job the real question is not the hardware but the calendar, because what is on the disk is bounded by how long the unit was holding before it stopped.
Recorders write in a manufacturer's own format and loop over the oldest footage continuously. The clock on a CCTV job is retention, not hardware.
Stiction: heads stuck to the platter surface
The heads have settled onto the platters and adhered. The motor cannot break them free, and forcing it is what causes the damage.
Seized spindle motor
The bearing has failed and the platter stack will not turn regardless of the heads.
Insufficient powerbetter news
A bus-powered drive on a weak port or a failing adapter can beep simply because it cannot start. Worth ruling out, and better news if so.
What to check first on a CCTV recorder
- Check whether the recorder is beeping or the drive is. Recorders alarm audibly for lost video, network faults and full disks, and all of those sound urgent and mean nothing mechanical.
- Work out the date the recording stopped and the date of the incident. If recording stopped before the incident, no amount of drive work will produce footage that was never written.
- Leave the drive in the unit and powered off.
What not to do
Do not let the recorder format or initialise the disk when it offers to, which it will, because from its point of view an unreadable disk is one that needs preparing. That prompt is the single most destructive button on a CCTV job.
How recoverable this is
Almost always requires the drive to be opened before anything can be read, because the fault is that the platters are not turning. Once the mechanical problem is corrected the data underneath is frequently intact, because the failure is in the moving parts rather than in the recorded surface. That correction is cleanroom work.
What moves it, for your device specifically:
- Whether the platters were damaged during attempts to force them
- How many start attempts the drive has had since the beeping began
- Whether the head stack can be freed without surface contact
- Whether a matching donor drive is available
